Lesson on a social issue "Investigating Gender Differences in Income"

In this lesson, students will investigate the relationship between a person's sex (male or female) and their average employment income. Students will retrieve data from Statistics Canada's E-STAT database and create scatter plots. Then they will analyse the similarities and differences between two scatter plots (comparing data for provinces/territories and large urban centres) and use informal methods to determine the equations of lines of best fit.

Secondary math lesson : Piecewise modeling with multiple functions: Federal Debt

A new lesson asks students to analyze data on the federal debt from 1867 to 2008 and then model them with a mathematical function. Students will work in small groups to analyze the data for separate time periods. By applying function models to different periods, students will realize that Canada's federal debt is best modelled by a series of different function types.

A new page entitled Investigating social justice issues gives teachers and students a series of indicators that they can analyse with the mathematical tools they have learned. Health Behaviour of school children microdata

Microdata from the survey on the Health Behaviour of school children have been added to the Data page for Mathematics, Grades 9 to 12. This file contains a subset of 89 variables from the HBSC survey, which was administered to over 11,000 Canadian children in Grades 6 to 10. A student activity along with analysis ideas accompany the microdata file.
